LASER TREATMENT FOR EYES

Laser treatment for eyes is usually associated with vision correction technique to correct shortsightedness (Myopia), farsightedness (Hyperopia), astigmatism and the want for reading glasses (Presbyopia). It is also used to remedy the diabetic retinopathy and detached retinas.

The three main laser vision treatment methods offered are Lasik, Lasek and PRK which are relatively different techniques and none of them require an overnight hospital stay. Most laser treatments for eyes have short recovery times and patients can return to their regular activities on the next day.

Lasik is the most accredited type of laser eye surgery. A laser eye surgeon (ophthalmic surgeon) reform the cornea using a distinctive laser known as an excimer laser. Lasik has the shortest resurgence time compared to Lasek and PRK.

Lasek is a somewhat different method to Lasik, in that a flap is cut from the protective tissue over the eye and not in the cornea underneath. Though Lasek has a slightly longer healing time than Lasik, it can be used on patients with abnormally thin or flat corneas.

PRK was the primary remedial vision procedure to use excimer lasers. With PRK an outer layer of cells from the surface of the cornea are removed rather than a corneal flap. This elongates the recovery time and discomfort felt after the surgery.

Laser eye treatments can address refractive deficiencies caused by the profile of your eye. By reshaping the cornea, the clarity of your vision can be enhanced. After laser eye treatment, you may be able to discontinue wearing glasses or contact lenses. The laser beam is guided by a computer, making it very accurate. This precise reshaping of the cornea to enhance its capability is what is so pioneering about laser eye treatment.
