IMPLANTABLE CONTACT LENSE

Years ago, in order to restore focus to the eye after cataract removal, the patient needed to wear thick heavy glasses or a contact lens neither of which were ideal.

There are always new and exciting developments being made in the field of ophthalmology. Today, implant of contact lens, known as Intra-Ocular Lens (IOL), is an artificial aid surgically implanted inside the eye in order to provide a better focus of images on the retina and to restore wellness of vision correction that’s sharper, clearer and has greater depth and dimension.

The procedure of implant is performed in a specialist ophthalmic theatre. Patient will be required a local anesthetic (injection) to numb the eye and antibiotic eye drops are administered 30 minutes before the anesthetic to help prevent infection during surgery.

Lens implant surgery is suitable in cases of moderate to severe short sight, long sight and astigmatism and offers permanent vision correction. This treatment is also used for cataract surgery and refractive lens exchange.

The Intra-ocular lenses are miniature lenses that are produced in a variety of optical strengths like spectacle or contact lenses. This very well established eye treatment is rapidly becoming as popular as laser eye surgery.

The main advantage of the implant over traditional corrective laser eye surgery is that patients may experience significant improvement in quality of vision after the lens is implanted.

The contact lens implants make it a lot easier for these people to live their every day lives in comfort. It helps the patients look normal, give color to the eye and provide a normal sized pupil.
